National Irrigation Specialist

 Food and Agriculture Organization is currently seeking applications from eligible applicants for the post of National Irrigation Specialist based in  Addis Ababa, Ethiopia


Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is supporting the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in establishing national web-based Irrigation Management Information System. The project is in response to the request of MoA for technical assistance and it aims to enable the Government of Ethiopia in making evidence-based decisions in irrigated agriculture.


Reporting Lines:


Under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative (FAOR) in Ethiopia, direct supervision and the technical guidance of the FAO Ethiopia Irrigation and Water Resources Officer, and in consultation with the MoA, the consultant will undertake the activities detailed  below.


Technical Focus:

  • Irrigated Agriculture Development

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Support the project coordinator in all activities as requested;
  • Assist in developing a detail methodology for data collection;
  • Actively participate in the preparation of training programs and guidelines and delivery of training ;
  • Support in setting and methods of calculations of indicators to be adopted and revision of guidelines;
  • Review secondary data and identify data gaps and conduct data analysis;
  • Provide technical support and supervise field data collection;
  • Check the data collected for correctness and provide feedback to the data collectors;
  • Collate irrigation schemes identified from satellite images and with ground data;
  • Assist in integrating GIS-data with irrigation database;
  • Collect and process meteorological data for sample irrigation schemes;
  • Estimate meteorological parameters required for estimating crop water requirement;
  • Calculate crop water requirements based on cropping patterns to be collected from sample irrigation schemes;
  • Assist in the development of module for incorporating in estimation of meteorological and crop water requirements the irrigation database;
  • Assist in the preparation of specifications of equipment to be purchased;
  • Assist in the preparation of contract agreements (LoAs) with government institutions and follow-up LoA Implementation;
  • Monitor data entry in the agricultural water management information system;
  • In collaboration with hydrologist, conduct data analysis including estimation of agricultural water uses;
  • Perform any other related duties as required;


  • Minimum Requirements
  • Nationals of Ethiopia
  • Advanced university degree in irrigation or natural resources
  • At least 5 years  of experience in irrigation scheme study, design and management, provision of training in irrigated agriculture, data management, exposure to GIS applications for irrigation database development
  • Working knowledge of English
